Peggy Compton is a nurse and neuroscientist who has served on the UCLA School of Nursing faculty since she joined the Acute Care Section in 1997. Dr. Compton earned her Nursing, M.S. in Medical-Surgical Nursing, and Ph.D. in Neuroscience Nursing at NYU. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the NIDA Drug Abuse Research Center at UCLA, where she researched pain and addiction responses in opioid (methadone, buprenorphine) addicts. Dr. Compton has chaired the School of Nursing Doctoral Committee and is actively involved in graduate and nursing education. She is a recipient of the International Nurses Society on Addictions, Research in Addictions Nursing Award, the Dorfman Journal Paper Award, and the American Society of Addiction Medicine, Young Investigator Award, and is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. Since joining the nursing faculty, she has overseen the development of and taught the graduate level Pathophysiology course, the graduate level Neuropsychiatric Nursing Sub-specialty courses, and the doctoral level Nursing Theory course. Her clinical research centers on the characterization and pharmacological management of opioid-induced hyperalgesia in opioid addicts, and behavioral indicators of addiction in chronic pain patients.
