Examination of human emotional development and associated neurobiology

Our laboratory examines human emotional development and associated neurobiology. We use structural and functional MRI, behavioral, and physiological measures in toddlers, children, and adolescents to map out normative changes in the neurobiology of emotional reactivity and regulation. Various research projects in the laboratory focus on fear learning and anxiety, implicit learning, and face processing. In addition, we examine the effects of early caregiving deprivation on these neurodevelopmental trajectories by studying children who have been adopted from orphanage care. Our NIMH-funded research follows children longitudinally from childhood through the transition into adolescence to better understand how connectivity between the amygdala and prefrontal cortex are associated with individual differences in emotional behaviors.

Dr. Tottenham is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at UCLA. She received her Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota in Developmental Psychology and Neuroscience and trained at the Sackler Institute for Developmental Psychobiology at Weill Cornell Medical College. Her research focuses on emotional development and associated neurobiology, with a special emphasis on early adverse experiences.
